The Valley of Flower is the most beautiful valley situated at the western Himalayas in the Garwhal region, Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This is the dream trekking destination for all the trekkers around the world. As its name implies there you will find different kinds of Himalayan flowers and this area is also enriched with various kinds of Himalayan flora and fauna.
This valley has an interesting history. This valley is actually the result of an accidental discovery in 1931 by the British Mountaineer, Frank Smit. They were coming back from there Himalaya expedition so they unknowingly took the wrong path and reach there. After seeing the most beautiful formation of different flowers looks like a broad carpet on the land from height at this valley they named it as – “ Valley of Flowers”. There are some myths also related to this valley that is it is the home of fairies and gods. The valley is a national park recognized as Nanda Devi National Park in 1982 and later in 2004, it became UNESCO MAB reserve. The park
is under the authority of the Uttarakhand forest department.
To reach Valley of Flowers it requires 17 km trekking. The nearest town for Valley of Flower is Joshimath which is strongly connected by road with Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun. For traveling to Joshimath Delhi will be the best from there you can take a train, bus or private cab to reach Haridwar or Dehradun. The trekking starts from Govindghar where it is 24 km before the main pilgrimage destination of Hindus that is Shree Badrinath Dham. Govindghat is a small hamlet like place near Joshimath. For Valley of Flower and Hemkund Sahib, the route from Govindgaht to Ghangaria is the same then the way splits one goes to Valley and another one goes to Hemkund Sahib. Travelers and trekkers are not allowed to stay in the park so you can rent accommodation at Ghangaria.
How to Reach
Haridwar is the nearest railway station which has well connectivity with the major cities of India. Trains like Nanda Devi Express is the most favored train to reach from Delhi. Joshimath is 280 km away from Haridwar so you can take a government/ private bus or you can hire a private taxi cab to reach there. It will take 10-11 hrs to reach and time may also depend upon traffic conditions.
As you reach Haridwar there are various modes of road transportation available to reach Joshimath.
Near Airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport which is strongly connected with Delhi and also well-connected with the major airports of India via Delhi. So from there, you can hire a private cab.
Best Time To Visit
June to September is the best time to visit and to enjoy the scenic views. On 31st October this valley shut down by the forest department every year. From November to February there is heavy snowfall in this area and flowers drys up and leave their seeds. As the snow melts after March then flowers blooms till the month of June. Itinerary
Day 1: Haridwar to Govind Ghat
As you reach Haridwar after freshening up start your journey towards Govind Ghat. It will take 11 hrs to reach to Govind Ghat as the distance you have to cover 291 km. After a long drive as you reach there check-in at hotel/guesthouse/homestay. Have some rest and enjoy your evening with dinner.
Day 2: Govind Ghat To Ghangharia
Start your day early with a delicious breakfast. Pack your bags and start trekking towards Ghangharia. The distance between both of these places is 14 km. It will take 5-6 hrs to reach. After check-in at stay. Explore the surroundings. Dinner and night stay at the hotel Ghanghariya.
Day 3: Ghnagharia To Valley Of Flowers
Wake-up early in the morning, have your breakfast and start the trek towards Valley of Flowers. The valley is at height of 3505 m from the sea level. The length of the trek is 5 km one side. As you reach the entrance of the valley obtain your ticket to get amazed by the most scenic views of the valley. At the valley, you will spot Himalayan rose, Greanimus and several species of flowers. As you complete the visit and having lunch head back to Ghangharia. Take rest at Hotel.
Day 4: Ghanghariya To Hemkund Sahib
Start your trekking early in the morning to reach the Hemkund Sahib the sacred place where you will seek the blessings of Shri Guru Nanak Ji and Shri Guru Govind Singh Ji. There is a sacred lake also. There you will experience the Brahma Kamal flowers which only grows at the higher altitude. Spending your whole at this holy place head back to Ghanghariya.
Day 5: Ghanghariya To Govind Ghat
Wake-up early, have breakfast and trek back to Govind Ghat. Check-in at the Govind Ghat hotel and take rest.
Day 6: Govind Ghat To Haridwar
Board on the bus to reach Haridwar for the ongoing journey with the sweet memories of the trip.
